GQ x Lands' End

Last week, I teamed up with GQ and Lands’ End to try out the new, "Canvas by Lands’ End." The American-designed collection is youthful and modern for both men and women.I met the other nine GQ Insiders at the Skyport Marina to catch a Blade (the new “Uber for Helicopters”) to Montauk, New York. Being able to see Manhattan from above was truly a special experience. Forty-five minutes later we arrived in the Hamptons and headed straight to Gurney’s Montauk Resort and Spa for our fittings with the Lands' End team. I chose green, sea-foam swim trunks and a full-body wet suit to wear before heading to Ditch Plains Beach: it was surfing time.I always wanted to give surfing a try, so I was excited (and a little nervous) as I stepped into my surf lesson. I’ll admit - it didn’t help that two days prior to hitting the waves I saw “The Shallows,” a film centered around a shark attack just 200 yards from shore, but I was determined to successfully surf. After a quick safety lesson, I zipped up my wet suit and jumped into the water with my instructor. Paddling out into the crashing waves was invigorating! I felt completely warm and protected against the cold sea in my wet suit. There was something calming about sitting on my board while waiting to catch the waves. I won’t lie – the first 30 minutes were a bit rough. The series of events went like this: jump up, stumble, lose balance, fall right, jump up, stumble, lose balance, fall left. My instructor gave me a few pointers and suddenly it clicked – I was riding waves all the way to the shore… and I was addicted. An hour and a half later I was catching wave after wave and I completely understood why surfing is such a fun sport. I have a lot of respect for surfers because the sport is an intense total body workout- and it is not easy! After a day at sea, we went back to our hotel rooms to get ready for dinner at The Surf Lodge. Dressing in a lightweight, stretch chino suit, I was definitely ready for a cocktail or two! The seafood was delicious and the views were picturesque. The Surf Lodge is an indoor/outdoor restaurant, lounge and bar along the water and is known as one of the hot spots of the Hamptons – it was the perfect, relaxing ending to a day full of adventure.I was very impressed with the quality and style of the new Canvas by Lands' End line and I look forward to exploring more of their designs throughout the rest of summer (and hopefully hitting the waves at least one more time)! Shop my night time look here.
